Dirk Nowitzki had a team-high 22 points as the Dallas Mavericks won their fourth consecutive game with a 96-92 triumph over the LA Clippers.
The German forward was 5-of-15 from the floor and 11-of-15 from the line for the defending NBA champions who trail the San Antonio Spurs by a game and a half in their division.
Caron Butler led the Clippers with 23 points and Chris Paul chipped in with 16 points and nine assists for LA who return home to Los Angeles after a successful 4-2 six game road trip.
Mired in last place in the Western Conference the New Orleans Hornets pulled off something of an upset as they beat the Utah Jazz 86-80.
Chris Kaman, who is expected to be traded shortly, had a game-high 27 points and 13 rebounds as the Hornets built up a large lead before holding off a spirited Jazz rally down the stretch.
The Golden State Warriors picked up their third straight win as they defeated the Phoenix Suns 102-96 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland.
David Lee led all scorers with 28 points while also pulling down 12 rebounds and rookie Klay Thompson added 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting as the former Washington State star continues to progress well.
