Marcus Kruger picked up his seventh goal of the campaign early in the third period as the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-1.
Played before an over capacity United Center in Chicago, the Blackhawks snapped Detroit's six-game winning streak with goals from Kruger and Jimmy Hayes, against a Red Wing side that was without Pavel Datsyuk, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday and is expected to miss the next two weeks.
Jeff Carter hit a hat-trick for the Columbus Blue Jackets as they doubled up the San Jose Sharks 6-3 at the Nationwide Arena.
The Phoenix Coyotes took advantage of the Sharks slip up to pull into a tie atop the Pacific division with San Jose after Phoenix edged the Los Angeles Kings 5-4 in a shootout.
The losses continue to pile up for the Montreal Canadiens, as the Habs were blanked 3-0 at home by the Dallas Stars.
Kari Lehtonen stopped all 31 shots he faced as Dallas trail LA by two points in the race for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Standing between Los Angeles and Dallas are the Calgary Flames, who had a great chance to move up but were crushed 6-1 at home by the Edmonton Oilers.
Scott Hannan opened the scoring for the Flames midway through the first only to see Edmonton knock six passed the Calgary goalie tandem of Mikka Kiprusoff and his replacement Henrik Karlsson.
The Red Wings are 601.00 to win the Stanley Cup while the Sharks are 601.00 and the Avalanche are 601.00.
